Position Papers
Position Paper or Background Paper

A background position paper should be prepared by each delegate on each agenda item. Prepared in outline form, a position paper provides a summary of the information that delegates may wish to present in a formal speech. By writing a well-thought-out synopsis of the various aspects of the agenda topic, delegates develop a better understanding of the whole problem and are able to defend their position or to challenge others. Background papers should be prepared in advance of the Model UN conference; feedback from other members of the delegation is especially useful. Students may find the outline provided below helpful in preparing a background position paper:
1.Background of the agenda item in the United Nations
a. Main elements of the problem
b. General positions of importance on the issue.
